Virginia uses paint and the written word to tell stories.

She was born in Berkeley California and grew up in Connecticut, trailing her entomologist father with a butterfly net in one hand and a sketchbook in the other. Not much has changed. Two decades later, she found herself trudging through the Amazon basin after a team of scientists, working as a scientific illustrator.

At Oberlin College she majored in Studio Art and Creative Writing. Her diverse background in the arts, including poetry, film, theater, voice and dance, serve to inform and feed each other. She received the Ellen Battell Stoeckel Fellowship to Yale’s Norfolk Summer School of Art and attended SVA’s Summer Residency Program and the Vermont Studio Center. She has worked as a studio assistant for Julie Heffernan and Wangechi Mutu. She recently received her MFA from MICA’s Hoffberger School of Painting in Baltimore and is currently living and making work in Brooklyn, New York.
